Do you need a Marine Survey in Istanbul?

Marine Surveyor Istanbul

If you’re thinking about buying a boat in Istanbul, having a Marine Surveyor Istanbul is a must. Our Marine Surveyor in Istanbul is like a detective for boats. They perform a detailed inspection of a yacht to make sure it’s in tip-top shape, which is especially important if you’re eyeing a used vessel. They can help you figure out the true value of your boat, too. With their knowledge of local boatyards and workshops, a Marine Surveyor Istanbul can offer invaluable insights and peace of mind, whether you’re a first-time buyer or a seasoned sailor in this bustling maritime hub.

Why buyers hire us in Istanbul

Foreign yacht buyers choose us for surveys in Istanbul because we combine local marina access with buyer-focused reporting. We work regularly across the main Istanbul marinas and anchorages, so we understand berth layouts, haul-out options, and the practicalities of getting a survey done without disrupting your schedule. Our reports are written in clear English and focus on the issues that matter most to buyers: safety, major defects, and negotiation leverage.

While we do not provide repair cost estimates, we give clear guidance on priority, risk, and typical repair approaches so you can discuss options with your broker, yard, or technician. As an independent Marine Surveyor Istanbul, we act for you, not the seller, broker, or marina.

Typical access and logistics (Istanbul)

Most pre-purchase surveys in Istanbul are conducted in-berth, with a short sea trial when weather and traffic allow. Common
locations include the European-side marinas (such as Güzelce and West Istanbul) and the Asian-side facilities, each with different access times and traffic patterns. For larger yachts, we coordinate with marina offices and local technicians to ensure  safe access to sea chests, propellers, and rudders, and we can arrange haul-outs at nearby yards when an underwater inspection is required.

We regularly survey yachts in marinas from Beylikdüzü and Atakoy on the European side to Pendik and Kadıköy on the Asian side, as well as Yalova.

Because Istanbul covers a very large area, we recommend that clients book their accommodation with the haul-out or survey location in mind. Staying close to the relevant marina or yard reduces transfer times, avoids peak traffic, and makes it easier to attend follow-up checks or additional inspections on short notice. If you are unsure which area is best, your Istanbul marine surveyor can advise on suitable neighborhoods once the survey and any haul-out plans are confirmed.

Common survey conditions in Istanbul

Istanbul’s saltwater environment, heavy commercial traffic, and seasonal weather create a distinct set of survey findings. We frequently see corrosion on underwater metals and running gear, especially on older vessels that spend long periods in berth without regular maintenance. Electrical systems and engine rooms often show signs of humidity-related wear, and we pay close attention to bonding, grounding, and battery installations.

Hull and deck issues vary by age and build quality, but moisture ingress, osmosis blisters, and deck-core saturation are not uncommon on older production boats. Our reports highlight these Istanbul-specific risks and prioritize them by safety impact and urgency, with practical guidance on next steps so you can decide what to repair, renegotiate, or walk away from.
This is the kind of local insight you want from your Marine Surveyor in Istanbul.

Istanbul Area Marinas

We regularly carry out surveys at the main marinas around Istanbul. If you are buying in any of these locations, you can engage a Marine Surveyor Istanbul who knows the site, the access constraints, and the typical issues seen in each ar

A Marine Surveyor’s Rave

Being a marine surveyor may sound like fun. But it's a job full of challenges, and you have to know what you're looking for and keep looking to find the unexpected. I think one of the biggest challenges of being a marine surveyor is dealing with the unknown.'

When I step on a new boat, I never know what I'm going to find. A yacht might look like in Bristol shape, but have she may have hidden issues inside. Every vessel has a story, and my job is to uncover it. This can be tricky because you have to be suspicious about anything and everything... Always.'

What helped me tackle this challenge was gaining experience with different types of boats, from small to large, catamarans to classic wooden yachts. I've developed a sharp eye for detail. I stepped up my NDT game by using the proven technology that helps me find not-so-obvious issues.'

Being the bearer of bad news is another challenge. No one wants to hear that their boat has problems. A big part of my job is to deliver bad news in a way that's easy to understand without causing panic. It's not just about listing the yacht's deficiencies; it's about explaining why they matter and what can be done about them.'

I've had to learn to explain technical details in simple language. That is the reason I have started offering post-survey briefings after the survey report is delivered. Ideally, I take my client to the boat for a walk-through and explain each issue on-site. If we don't have that chance, we do it face-to-face, over Zoom, or by phone. (Sometimes having limited face time with the client is another challenge of being a Marine Surveyor in Turkey) I believe this is a critical part of the marine survey process. This way, the client gets informed, not just worried. '

People depend on my reports to make major decisions, like buying an expensive boat. The weight of that responsibility can be heavy, so I have to be incredibly thorough to make sure my reports are always accurate. '

My background in managing refits has been a big advantage. It's one thing to spot a problem, but it's another to know exactly how to fix it. This experience allows me to provide practical, reliable advice. My goal is to make sure every client has all the information they need to feel confident about their vessel.'

Why should foreign buyers hire an accredited marine surveyor in Istanbul before closing a yacht purchase?

An independent pre-purchase survey protects your investment by identifying hidden structural defects, moisture in fiberglass or wood hulls, engine wear, and electrical safety issues. Accredited surveys (e.g., IIMS or ABYC standards) also provide the formal documentation required by international marine insurance underwriters and flag state registries.

We conduct full condition and pre-purchase surveys across all major Istanbul locations, including West Istanbul Marina (Yakuplu), Ataköy Marina, Viaport Marina (Tuzla), Setur Kalamış & Fenerbahçe Marinas, as well as commercial haul-out yards and refit facilities in Tuzla and Yalova.

Yes. A comprehensive pre-purchase survey involves both in-water systems testing and an out-of-water bottom inspection. We coordinate directly with local Istanbul marina crane operators or travel lifts to inspect the underwater hull, running gear, cutless bearings, rudders, and keel joints.

A poat survey breiwfing is provided within 24 hours following the physical inspection on-site. The complete, illustrated digital survey report—formatted in English for international banks, insurers, and brokers—is delivered within 2-5 business days. (based on the complexity of the assignment)
