A used catamaran can offer exceptional cruising space, shallow-water access and a stable platform for Mediterranean family sailing. It can also conceal expensive defects across two hulls, two engines, extensive systems and, in many cases, a complex charter history. A proper guide to buying used catamaran vessels starts with one principle: assess condition before becoming attached to the layout, the view from the saloon or the advertised price.

Multihulls do not simply have twice the equipment of a monohull. Their structure, load paths, bridge-deck geometry and operating profile create their own inspection priorities. The objective is not to find a perfect vessel. It is to establish what is sound, what needs attention, what the remedial work is likely to cost, and whether the price properly reflects those facts.

Start with the right catamaran for your use

Before viewing listings, define how the boat will actually be used. A privately maintained owners’ version with three or four cabins may suit extended family cruising. A six-cabin charter layout may produce income potential, but it may also have substantially higher wear to accommodation, machinery and hotel systems.

The distinction matters. A lightly used catamaran that has spent most of its life in private hands can still have neglected maintenance. Conversely, a former charter yacht may be well documented and professionally serviced, yet carry a higher operating load than its cosmetic presentation suggests. Neither is automatically the better purchase.

Consider where the vessel will be kept and cruised. In Bodrum and across the eastern Mediterranean, sun exposure, high summer temperatures, seasonal lay-up practices and marina electrical supply all influence condition. A catamaran intended for local coastal cruising has different priorities from one being prepared for ocean passages. Be realistic about payload too. Watermakers, generators, air conditioning, lithium battery banks, dinghies and solar arrays add capability, but they also add weight, complexity and maintenance obligations.

Set a purchase budget that includes correction costs

The asking price is only the opening figure. Buyers should separately allow for the transaction, immediate safety work, deferred maintenance, berthing, insurance, haul-out and any upgrades required for their intended use. This is particularly important with used catamarans because seemingly minor issues can repeat across duplicate systems.

Two aging saildrives, two engine cooling systems, multiple heads, a generator, air-conditioning units and a large battery installation can create a sizeable first-year spend. Standing rigging, sails and electronics may also be approaching replacement even when they appear serviceable during a brief viewing.

A sensible budget includes contingency. The purpose is not to assume the worst, but to avoid negotiating a purchase based on an optimistic estimate. If the vessel requires major work, obtain realistic quotations where possible. Yard access, parts availability and the timing of work in a busy Mediterranean marina can affect the final cost as much as the equipment price.

Inspect the structure beyond the visible finish

Catamarans rely on two hulls connected by a bridge deck. This configuration distributes loads differently from a monohull and makes structural inspection especially important. Cosmetic cleanliness should not be confused with structural condition.

A pre-purchase inspection should examine the hulls, deck mouldings, bulkheads, chainplates, crossbeam areas, mast support structure and the internal connections between hull and deck. Particular attention is needed around high-load fittings, anchor arrangements, rudder stocks, keel or mini-keel areas, and any locations where water may have entered core materials.

Moisture readings need interpretation

Moisture meter readings can be useful, but a number alone is not a diagnosis. Readings are influenced by laminate construction, paint systems, ambient conditions and the presence of internal fittings. An experienced surveyor compares patterns, validates findings with visual inspection and, where justified, recommends further investigation.

Look for repaired impact damage, stress cracking, distorted surfaces and signs of previous grounding. Small gelcoat cracks are not always structural, yet cracking around heavily loaded areas deserves careful assessment. The same applies to bridge-deck damage. A catamaran that has repeatedly contacted waves beneath the bridge deck may show more than cosmetic wear.

Check for water ingress and coring issues

Deck hardware leaks are common on vessels of all types. On a catamaran, leaking stanchion bases, cleats, hatches, window frames and deck fittings can introduce moisture into cored construction or concealed interior spaces. Staining, soft areas, loose fittings and unexplained sealant repairs should be investigated rather than dismissed.

Windows and large saloon openings also warrant close attention. Their seals are exposed to heat, UV and hull movement. A leak may be manageable; extensive water damage to surrounding structure, linings or electrical systems is a different matter.

Treat machinery as a complete operating system

Twin engines offer manoeuvrability and redundancy, but only if both are properly maintained. Review engine hours alongside service history, not in isolation. Low hours can indicate light use, but they can also mean long periods inactive, with resulting concerns around cooling passages, seals, fuel condition and corrosion.

During inspection and sea trial, machinery should be assessed from cold start through normal operating temperature and under load. The survey process should consider exhaust condition, cooling-water flow, mounts, controls, charging performance, visible leaks and the state of the engine compartments. Where appropriate, oil and coolant analysis can add useful evidence, though it should be interpreted in context rather than treated as a pass-or-fail test.

Saildrives require particular care. Their external seals, anodes, diaphragms and replacement intervals are safety-critical matters. Confirm the manufacturer’s specified diaphragm-change history with invoices or credible records. If evidence is absent, budget accordingly rather than relying on verbal assurance.

Electrical systems deserve the same discipline. Many used catamarans have been upgraded over time with solar panels, inverters, chargers, batteries and additional consumer equipment. A system may function at the dock while still having unsuitable cable sizing, poor battery protection, unsupported modifications or inadequate ventilation. Modern lithium installations can be excellent, but they should be designed and installed to an appropriate standard.

Do not skip the rig and sail assessment

A catamaran rig carries significant loads, particularly when the boat is sailed conservatively but heavily loaded. Standing rigging has a finite service life, and age alone may justify replacement even if no obvious defects are visible. Ask when the rigging was last renewed, whether the mast has been unstepped for inspection, and what records exist for terminals, tangs, chainplates and mast fittings.

Inspect sails with a sailmaker or rigging specialist when their condition materially affects value. Sun-damaged stitching, stretched cloth, tired furling gear and worn running rigging can quickly change the practical cost of ownership. Sea trial conditions may not reveal every weakness, but they can show whether the boat handles, steers and rigs as expected.

Use the sea trial to verify, not to entertain

A sea trial is a controlled opportunity to operate the vessel, not a celebratory first cruise. It should include engine operation at a range of speeds, steering response, gear engagement, navigation equipment, charging systems, windlass operation and, when conditions allow, sailing performance.

Prepare a clear list of equipment expected to work. Test freshwater pumps, toilets, refrigeration, bilge pumps, air conditioning, generator and communications equipment where fitted. Some faults are minor and negotiable. Others reveal wider maintenance shortcomings. A failed bilge pump is not merely an inconvenience; it raises questions about inspection routines and vessel safety.

The boat should ordinarily be hauled out as part of a serious pre-purchase process. Underwater sections cannot be responsibly assessed from a berth. Haul-out inspection allows examination of hull surfaces, rudders, propellers, saildrives, anodes, through-hull fittings and signs of grounding or osmosis-related work.

Make documentation part of the technical due diligence

A well-kept file does not guarantee a well-kept yacht, but incomplete records increase uncertainty. Request ownership documents, registration details, VAT status where relevant, builder’s documentation, service invoices, refit records, insurance claims and evidence of major replacements.

For a catamaran with charter history, ask for maintenance schedules, operational records and details of any significant repairs. Confirm that the vessel’s declared specification matches what is actually installed. Changes to engines, batteries, electronics or safety equipment may have implications for compliance, insurance and future resale.

It is also prudent to distinguish between statements made by an owner, broker or yard and evidence that can be verified. Clear documentation supports an informed decision. Unsupported claims should be treated as unconfirmed until inspected or evidenced.

Commission an independent pre-purchase survey

The surveyor’s role is not to sell the boat, protect the deal or create alarm over every imperfection. It is to provide an independent, evidence-based assessment so the buyer can decide with clarity.

For a used catamaran, the scope should be appropriate to the vessel and transaction. It commonly includes an out-of-water structural inspection, internal inspection, machinery observations, systems review, sea trial attendance and review of accessible documentation. Specialist input may be recommended for engines, rigging, ultrasound testing or electrical systems when findings justify it.

A useful report separates material defects from routine maintenance and cosmetic observations. It should identify safety concerns, explain probable implications and set out practical recommendations. This allows the buyer to negotiate from facts, plan post-purchase work and decide whether the vessel remains suitable at the agreed price.
