For a buyer considering a yacht in Bodrum or elsewhere in the Mediterranean, the strongest pre-purchase process normally includes both an afloat inspection and an out-of-water inspection. The exact scope depends on the vessel’s age, construction, intended use, and available records, but omitting the haul out can leave a substantial part of the asset unexamined.

Boat Survey vs Haul Out: The Essential Difference

A haul out means lifting the yacht from the water and placing her ashore, usually with a travel lift, crane, or slipway. It is not, by itself, a survey. The yard provides access to the hull, appendages, running gear, and other underwater components. Cleaning, blocking, pressure washing, and relaunching are operational services, often arranged at the buyer’s cost under the terms of the sale agreement.

A marine survey is an independent inspection and professional opinion on the vessel’s condition. During a pre-purchase survey, the surveyor examines accessible systems and structure, identifies observed defects, assesses their likely significance, and records findings in a detailed report. The report should distinguish between immediate safety concerns, material defects, maintenance issues, and items that require further specialist investigation.

The distinction matters because a buyer can spend money on a haul out without receiving a meaningful technical assessment. Equally, an afloat survey can be valuable but incomplete if the underwater body is not made available for inspection. The haul out creates visibility. The surveyor supplies the judgment.

What an Out-of-Water Inspection Can Reveal
